“It’s a great feeling to see what you’ve created.”
My skilled trade
I am currently training to be a designer at Silhouette International. The departments give us assignments to design a certain product. I start with hand drawn sketches to show what the product will look like. I then transfer the sketch into a 3D program on a computer. Finally the product is made in the workshop based on these drawings. We start the first year of training in the workshop with an overview of production. If you don’t get this overview, you’ll find it difficult later on designing parts that can also be manufactured. The challenge here is to acquire the technical expertise that increases as the training program proceeds.
How I got here
Even at high school it was clear that I was very keen on drawing. While I was at the polytechnic institute I enquired about the skilled trades that were associated with it. That’s when I came across training as a designer. When I then looked for companies that offer the appropriate training places, I discovered Silhouette International. I enjoyed attending the open day very much, my application was successful and I’m now in my second year of training.
And the best thing about it is
The coolest thing about my job is seeing the creation of a machine from scratch. From planning to production until the point where it does what it ultimately can. It’s a great feeling to know what you’ve created.
