„We are constantly working to overcome technical limitations.“
What my job is all about and the coolest thing about it
I’m responsible for designing our spectacles. It all starts with an idea, which we draw on a sheet of paper with a pen. We then fill in the details using CAD. What I think is really great is pursuing and executing ideas together with my team and in cooperation with the research and development department. And then experiencing them “live” in the real world when lots of people are wearing the glasses. Whenever I’ve seen through a project from beginning to end and I see the product being well received “out there”, it’s incredibly satisfying.
The greatest challenge
Of course there are also times when we’re not bubbling with ideas so much or alternatively we’re going gangbusters. That’s when we have to invest more time and stay at the office a bit longer occasionally. You have to find the best way for yourself to be creative. For example, I need a window so I can look out into the distance, listen to music or go for a run. There are all kinds of techniques to be creative, which you can learn as well. Unfortunately, not everything I think of is technically feasible. Accepting this is often a major challenge. However, we’re also working on overcoming these limitations.
How I got my job at Silhouette
I attended high school and then studied product and industrial design for four years. Straight after that I worked as a product designer at a design agency in Germany and stayed there for 10 years. Now I’m here. If you have the talent to come up with new ideas and innovations, you don’t necessarily have to go to college – there are several examples of this in our team. The most important thing is to go through life with an open mind and inquisitiveness and to enjoy discovering new things.
